Do You Need Compliance Software Yet? A Self-Test for Growing Employers
1. Too Early, Too Late
Founders tend to make one of two mistakes with compliance. Some wait until a notice arrives and then buy in a panic. Others buy a full platform in their first year, when a calendar and a careful person would have done. Neither is a good use of money.
The right moment is not a headcount. It is a level of complexity.
2. The Five-Question Test
Answer yes or no.
- Do you employ people, or deploy contract workers, in more than one state?
- Do you use at least one contractor for labour on your premises?
- Do you hold three or more licences or registrations with different renewal dates?
- Does one person hold most of your compliance knowledge in their head?
- Have you received a statutory notice, or been asked for compliance proof by an investor or customer, in the last two years?
3. Reading Your Score
Zero or one yes: a good calendar and a checklist are enough. Revisit when anything changes.
Two yes answers: you are close. Start documenting what the one knowledgeable person does, and run a free audit to see where the gaps are.
Three or more: manual tracking is carrying risk it should not. This is the point where regulatory compliance software earns its place, because the failures it prevents are the ones spreadsheets miss: a lapsed renewal, a contractor who stopped paying provident fund, a register in last year's format.
The contractor question deserves emphasis. Under the Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act, 1970, a principal employer can carry liability for specified contractor failures. One contractor is enough to change your risk profile.
4. The Cost You Do Not See
The visible cost of manual compliance is the person's time. The invisible one is the chance that something slips and arrives as interest, damages, a licence problem or a blocked funding round. The four Labour Codes took effect on 21 November 2025, with detailed rules still being notified, so the cost of relying on memory is higher now than a year ago.
If you reach three yes answers, the Iztty guide to regulatory compliance software explains what to expect and how to screen options.
